Beer is such a simple word. Four letters, two vowels, rather symmetrical, yet not worthy of lengthy musing. Interestingly enough, the process of beer making is quite simple and yet so easy to ruin. How is something so simple, and so complex at the same time? It is a topic of deep consideration. Who could possibly master it? These guys did in Columbia, MD! Let’s check out the top 5 Breweries near Columbia and see what some of their biggest crowd pleasing brews prove to be!

Hysteria Brewing Company

It started with a single batch and grew from there. Their passion for crafting beer knows no fear. Three friends got together to experiment making new beers and have made some mad inventions as they went. They’ve set out to create an environment drawing on the innovative, collaborative, and community driven atmosphere that makes craft beer brewing so special in Howard County. At Hysteria, they believe a business can be a valuable part of the community and aim to elevate the lives of their patrons, offering a welcoming, (pet)friendly and encouraging taproom experience. They strive to make bold, flavorful brews with an eye on the ever evolving techniques of craft brewing.

Notable Mentions:

  • Tipping Point – Pale Wheat Ale
  • Mother’s Milk – Nitro Milk Stout

Black Flag Brewing Company

They are the first production brewery and taproom in Columbia with 10 taplines. They have 5 signature beers always on tap, and have a rotating list of 5 that they make on their small batch system. Food trucks are available on their busiest days – Thursday’s, Friday’s, and Saturday’s – which are announced each week on the website. The Black Flag stands in direct opposition to the established norms. And that’s how they brew – crafting beers that focus heavily on flavors and aromas without concern for fitting any given category.

Notable Mentions:

  • Flagship IPA
  • K Kapowski – Amber
  • Brunch – Breakfast Stout

Jailbreak Brewing Company

Jailbreak signifies freedom of expression. Beginning in 2013, and becoming fully operational in 2014, their artfully crafted beer is meant to be an escape from your daily life. They are made up of professionals from various industries, all brought together by the common desire to make good beer.

Sapwood Cellars

Their goal is to be true to their community, planet, and themselves. Whenever possible they use ethically sourced grains, organic hops, local fruit, and free-range yeast. They are brewing beers that they want to drink that are reasonably priced, moderate alcohol, and above all tasty. The name sapwood comes from the fact that all wood comes from tender sapwood underneath the bark. It represents the new beginnings of wood that leads to their hoppy IPAs and the barrels that they age their beers in.

Notable Mentions:

  • Little by Slowly – Sour (Berliner Weisse)
  • Suite MNO – Wheat Beer
  • Unhook Yourself – IPA
